Q. How can counselling help me?

A. Counselling helps you take time out from your situation and see it from a fresh perspective. It can also give you a chance to explore complex or difficult issues in a safe and confidential environment.

Q. Is The Hysterectomy Association the right place to come with my problem?

A. If you are concerned about having a hysterectomy, want to talk about a hysterectomy you have already had or if you want to talk about the impact that your hysterectomy has had on different areas of your life, then we are the right place to come to.

Q. Do I have to pay for Counselling services?

A. You will be expected to pay for our counselling services. The cost of counselling is £45 per session face to face. You can also request telephone counselling, which costs £35 per session.

Q. Do I have to be referred to The Hysterectomy Association?

A. No. Many organisations and GPs do refer women to The Hysterectomy Association, but you can also contact us directly if you would like to talk about anything to do with a hysterectomy.

Q. Do The Hysterectomy Association counsellors have special training?

A. All counsellors working with The Hysterectomy Association will have a recognised qualification in Counselling and fully qualified counsellors will have significant experience. They have all received specialist professional development to enable them to work with hysterectomy patients. In addition some will have direct experience of hysterectomy, either themselves or a through a close female relative.

Q. Do you only provide services to women?

A. No. We are often contacted by the partners and husbands of hysterectomy patients because they are often affected greatly by a hysterectomy. Some of the issues that they raise are around changes in their relationship with their wife or partner; or concern about their ongoing health and well-being.

Q. Is the counselling confidential?

A. All counselling is in complete confidence. Information about you is only held on a ‘need to know’ basis and we will never give your name or any information about you to anyone outside The Hysterectomy Association, unless someone’s personal safety is at risk.

Q. What happens at a counselling session?

A. If you are having face to face counselling, your first session will be exploratory and will ask some specific questions about yourself and your problem to determine if counselling might be helpful to you. Some people find that this session is all they need to clear their thinking and help them decide what to do and so no further counselling is necessary. However, if you do decide that counselling is right for you, you can discuss with your counsellor about making a further appointment. If your counsellor doesn’t think we are the most appropriate organisation to help you at the moment, they may suggest referral to another organisation.

Q. How do I book a counselling session?

A. Please make a booking through our online shop here: https://www.hysterectomy-association.org.uk/product/counselling/ If you need to cancel a booking, you must do this at least 48 hours before your appointment otherwise we may not be able to refund your payment.

Q. What happens if I have a complaint?

A. The Hysterectomy Association always welcomes feedback and is keen to improve its services. We have a complaints procedure which aims to make the process straightforward and fair. Should you wish to make a complaint, in the first instance, please raise it with the Complaints Officer and we will send you a copy of our complaints procedure.
