Ever since I first started my periods at the age of 12 I never really dealt with them very well. When I was pregnant with my 1st child in 1987 I found I had anaemia which is why I always used to suffer with heavy periods. I was put on iron which i took for many years. It wasn’t until about a year ago I went to my doctor feeling washed out, had a blood test and found I had hardly any iron in me. A hysterectomy was my only option. I had my op in June 2011, was on pain killers for about three weeks and then from seven weeks no more bleeding. I have my life back, I can plan things weeks ahead without worrying if i am going to be ok. I may not of thought it at the time of recovery but its the best thing I ever did.

Hi Janice
I am so pleased things are going well for you. I suffered for about 4 years with heavier and heavier periods, like you l was anaemic. In May 2010 l started yet another 2 week period only this time it was still going strong at the beginning of September!! I also looked 8 months pregnant. I had my Hysterectomy in December 2010, and l have not looked back. I feel so good in myself, with lots more energy. If l had known l would feel so well, l would have had this done years ago.
I went into the operation with a very positive attitude, and my specialist said that it was this attitude that helped with my recovery. I didn’t dwell on the things l was losing – the ability to have kids etc, but on what l would be gaining. I took onboard the advice given to me by the wonderful Hysterectomy Association and found their book on how to have a successful Hysterectomy invaluable. The hospital loved it so much that they took down the name of the author and said they would be providing this book to future ladies due for a hysterectomy.
I am pleased things have turned out well for you, and thank you for sharing.

Thanks for sharing your story! It’s very similar to mine. I had my op in January and despite still having a low iron count, the sense of freedom is fantastic!! Really life changing

I am so pleased that you have your life back . I am due to have a hysterecetomy on the 31st May. I am very nervous about having it done. I am so glad that I have read your comment. Any advice would be most welcome.
Wishing all the best
