Mum with terminal cancer left to fend for herself

I don’t normally do this sort of thing, so apologies to those who may be offended by the content of this post. However, when I spoke to Brett I was moved by his story and the problems his mum, who has terminal cancer, now has.

If you are based on the Isle of White and think you could help out in some way, please do contact Brett on his mobile number: 07513944593

“Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing on behalf of my mum Sharon Johnstone who is suffering from cancer. After being told she they can not get rid of it completely she has endured chemo therapy and last Monday underwent an Hysterectomy.

She has three kids who have been in and out of foster care while she’s in and out of hospital.

The story is this:

Two days after the operation my mum was made to make her own way home from St Annes hospital in Southampton to Ryde in the isle of white.

On arriving home she has secreted so much fluid she has soaked a settee and now has to dispose of it.

The doctors were unhappy about her making her own way back but to add insult to injury the social workers have refused to give her the home help she requires so she is taking care of herself and is even going shopping as there is no one to do it.

Social services have said the woman who will be taking care of the kids when she dies are will have to look after her. Doing all the care for her in ways such as bathing her, cleaning her after the toilet, giving her medication and caring for his younger sisters. With MRSA and Swine Flu cases popping up everywhere my mum is severely vulnerable and I feel as if she has been left to die in a most undignified way.

I have phoned Macmillan nurses, social services, hospitals BBC, ITV I’ve phoned agencies for private care and am still unable to get her help.

Yesterday they took the clamps out of the 18 inch stomach wound exposing her insides FAR to early today she phoned me sobbing because she doesn’t think she’ll make it back from her next shopping spree.

Yours Sincerely, Brett Campbell (Son)”

One Response to Mum with terminal cancer left to fend for herself

Dear Brett, I have just read your story and I am appalled at the lack of care shown to your mother. Its hard to believe in this day and age that a woman can be left to fend for herself. I do hope she makes a good recovery. I am a 49 year old woman due to have an abdominal hysterectomy in September this year. I live in a homeless hostel and have no friends or family. I am concerned because I will have no help or care post op and I’m going to have to go through it all alone. It would be nice to have someone to talk to. I don’t know what I’m going to do about cooking, shopping and laundry. I don’t know how fit I’ll be and what to do if my condition deteriorates. The whole situation is really terrifying and I feel like I want to run away although I have nowhere to go to. Thanks for listening.
