Balloon thermal endometrial ablation is used to treat heavy bleeding in some women. It has also recently been the subject of a review by NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) to determine whether it is an appropriate treatment for use on NHS patients. A small balloon is inserted via a catheter through the vagina into the womb (uterus). The balloon is then filled with fluid and the fluid is heated to 87°C. This pressure and temperature is maintained for around 8 minutes which should be enough to remove the endometrial lining of the womb.
