Linda Parkinson-Hardman, founder of the Hysterectomy Association and Director of Internet Mentor Dorset Limited, has been selected as one of the UK’s Woman of Achievement and invited to the annual Women of the Year lunch on Monday 17th October at The InterContinental, London. This event is not only a networking opportunity of the most extraordinary women, but also a celebration of the changes these women have made to improve lives. Founded in 1955, this lunch provides yearly commemoration to a selection of the most inspirational women, and has in the past presented awards to the likes of Annie Lennox (2010), Sara Payne (2008), and Tina Turner (2005).

In July of this year, Linda Parkinson-Hardman received an invitation as recognition for her long-term support and commitment to guiding women through the hysterectomy process. Having founded The Hysterectomy Association in December 1997, Linda has continued to provide impartial and helpful advice to women facing a hysterectomy, ensuring they are making the most informed decisions based on their needs. The association itself remains unique due to the fact it is completely self-supporting, receiving no funding or grants.

Nominated for the award by members of The Hysterectomy Association, Linda said “I can’t tell you how great it feels to have made such a difference in these women’s lives. Invitations to this lunch are like gold-dust and I am so excited to be attending. Without my members, I wouldn’t have been able to set up the support network that exists today.”

In addition to her work for the association, Linda has also written a range of Hysterectomy books; The Pocket Guide to Hysterectomy, Losing the Woman Within, and 101 Handy Hints for a Happy Hysterectomy which is an Amazon best seller in the UK and the US.

Member of The Hysterectomy Association website Tessa Gray said “If it wasn’t for this website, I would never have gotten through my hysterectomy. I met some wonderful ladies through the forum who have helped me a great deal, calmed my nerves and answered all my questions. Linda has truly created a great place for women pre/post hysterectomy to be.” Hysterectomy is one of the most commonly performed operations with an estimated 60,000 operations every year in the UK alone.

In July 2007, The Hysterectomy Association posted a quick survey on the web. The purpose was to identify areas for possible future research. Over the course of the one week that the survey was available, there were 1639 respondents. Whilst the majority of the answers were what would have been expected given the anecdotal evidence we have received over the past 12 years, there was one response that stunned even us.

When asked the question ‘If You Could Make The Choice Again, Would You Still Have A Hysterectomy?’ A staggering 84.3% of those that answered it said that they would, a further 11% said that they might and only 4.7% said No.

Linda Parkinson-Hardman Director of The Hysterectomy Association was quoted as saying that she was extremely surprised by the result saying “we had always assumed from the conversations with women we have had over the years, that the vast majority of hysterectomy patients do have a positive experience, but we hadn’t expected it to be at this level”.

Often a hysterectomy is portrayed as being an operation for elderly women, whilst the survey found that most women having the surgery were aged between 30 and 50 years of age. Searching the Internet shows the vast majority of comment and support suggests that everyone regrets the experience. However, the survey results change these common perceptions completely. What the results show is that most women have their surgery, recover and then move on with their lives.

For further information, please download the report on the survey from The Hysterectomy Association website at:
The Hysterectomy Association is devoid of bias, entirely voluntary and receives no funding from any other organisation.
