Single-incision laparoscopic hysterectomy

There is a new type of hysterectomy currently being tested in the UK which is called SILS.  It is a single-port access surgery, or single-incision laparoscopic surgery.   The vast majority of women in the UK and abroad who have hysterectomies, typically have the traditional, invasive abdominal surgery (Total Abdominal Hysterectomy/Abdominal Hysterectomy).

With an abdominal incision a woman will be in hospital for around 3 – 5 days and then spend up to 13 weeks recovering.   SILS would mean a much shorter stay in hospital with a quicker recovery time due to the lack of major abdominal wound.  With SILS only a single small incision in the belly button is made that allows for the insertion of surgical instruments, once cut, the entire hysterectomy is performed through this incision.

For those who are less squeamish, a video is below that shows the procedure taking place.

  1. I underwent a Hysterectomy 21st Janurary 2010 , at King Edward Hospital, I had a vaginal hysterectomy and my ovaries are still in place. As for recovery I have had no problem so far I was mobile and comfortable by the second day , I left hopital 1-1/2 days after the procidure and Attended my step daughters wedding that afternoon I returned to work on very light duties on the 25th Janurary and am feeling very good I get a little tierd at times but I don’t think it is to do with the surgury I have eight children and the last two are 4 and two years old and occaiccionally wake at night , so as far as I feel for me the hysterectomy was great..

I just read your post. What sort of job do you do that you were able to return 4 days after having what is still major surgery? You have 8 children, which sounds like full time job to me, is your career job also full time? I have now been of 3.5 weeks and still nowhere near being ready to return to work, tummy looks like I am 6 months preggy at the moment.

Glad it’s all going so well. Four days, OMG.
