Welcome to the latest Hysterectomy Association newsletter, once again a month has flown by and it is time to keep everyone updated on what is happening in this world of women’s health. Firstly, however, I’d like to say congratulations to Laura Chandler - our Local Group Leader from Berkshire, who did a fantastic job on her local radio station when she was interviewed for the morning by Andrew Peach. She was joined by three other ladies from the Association as well, Rehka Sameer, Jill Warren and Heather Furby who all spent the morning with Maggie Philbin as well.

HRT - Flawed Studies Causing Mayhem

According to the International Menopause Society, the two biggest studies into the effects of HRT that took place in 2002 and 2003 were deeply flawed and had caused a massive knee jerk reaction which has lead to millions of women abandoning HRT and to thousands of doctors refusing to prescribe it.

Weight Loss During Menopause Linked to Bone Loss

Earlier today, I read two articles in a leading newspaper which caused me some concern because of the way they were writResearchers conducting a long term study at the University of Pittsburgh have said that women who experience weight loss during the menopause appear to be at a greater risk of bone loss at the hip. They also say that women who are using HRT also seem to run some sort of risk as well - albeit not as strong and that the rate of bone loss was much slower if they also lost weight.

Supracervical vs Total Hysterectomy

According to a committee of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, supracervical hysterectomy, which leaves the cervix intact, does not appear to have any clear benefits over a total hysterectomy, which removes the cervix as well as the uterus, in women with non-cancerous disease and should not be recommended as a superior technique.

Our next ‘Preparing for Hysterectomy’ workshop takes place in Reading this Saturday, November 10th starting at 9.30am. These innovative workshops are perfect if you would like to investigate your options in a friendly and supportive environment. They are focussed on the needs of the participants and as such have a very fluid approach to the subjects covered. Past workshops have considered all sorts of topics; which includes sex after hysterectomy, what factors influence whether ovaries should be removed and hints and tips for recovery. In addition, all participants will receive free copies of 101 Handy Hints for a Happy Hysterectomy, The Pocket Guide to Hysterectomy and Losing the Woman Within.
