Hi Anon, I am 6 weeks post op too and had the same concerns. I am due to go back to work in two weeks time, and got myself in quite a state worrying about it. I have discussed it at work and I know now I have some flexibility about how many hours I do to start with so I feel much better about it. It seems to be between 6 to 12 weeks off work depending on the nature of your job, though less if you are in America. Have you had your 6 week check yet? You should discuss your concerns with your doctor. Although I am pleased with my progress, I know I will be far from fully fit again in a couple more weeks and would not be able to go back to work and resume my usual schedule. I am fortunate in that I can be flexible with my job, but others may need more direct instructions from their doctor to achieve that.

Hi Sandra,
I know how you feel, I am 5 weeks post-op, had full abdom hyst & ovaries removed & can,t imagine going back too work. My post-op check up isn't until week 8 so I'll see what my consultant has to say. I think when you've had an abdominal hyst 12 weeks should be the min you have off due to all the healing inside but I suppose everyone feels different, keep in touch with how you get on.

Ta for your messages, it is not really worth rushing back to work as I am sure it will not do us any good. Feel quilty been off work when mentaly I feel Ok but the body just can't get going.
Did you feel once you got out of hospital you were suddenly on your own with not much advice?

Hi anon it has been the same it seems for everyone there is no input or help i think it because its a common op but we are told its a major one then left alone to deal with it. the help from the women on this site has been the only help ive been able to access without feeling a fool.

Hi all, I am 5 weeks post TAH, ovaries retained. I was doing really well, feeling full of life, that was until yesterday. I think I must have just done too much, coz I feel dreadfull now , my belly is swollen again, and its started stinging, and I feel a lot of pulling on my left side which hurts. I have a cert until easter weekend and have called my GP who has extended it by 2 more weeks as there is no way I could go to work as I feel now. I don't have any follow up appointment but am seeing the GP on the 15th so I shall speak to him then. I also feel its better to be completely recovered, I think the law states a woman can have 12 weeks off for hysterectomy I don't know if thats paid or not, I work for the NHS and we are but you would need to check.
As for post op advice this site has been fantastic
Good luck
Carolyn

I have also overdone it at week 5. Have been feeling great and did a bit of housework in the moring and went for a walk in the afternoon. Now am experiencing pain on right side and the discharge is worse than it has been for days. Going to put my feet up today and do nothing! Please don't be tempted to do too much too soon.

There seems to be a pattern at week 5. Lots of us starting to feel well enough to do things and suffering as a result. Isn't it a pity we dont find out until after the event! Grrrrrrrrrr
I agree about the 12 weeks off. It would save a lot of worry.

Hi all,
I agree with you all about recovery time, 5 weeks seems to be the time when we seem to over do it, also I feel really guilty being off work, I called them yesterday & they don't want me back until I'm 100% fit, no idea when that may be, can't bare the thought physically of returning to work, mentally I feel not too bad. Also without this site I would of gone crazy as your right there is no info out there post-op care, my consultant said "Take it easy" what kind of info is that!!!! no wonder so many women over do it & end up back in hospital having repair jobs done! Keep well all & rest, rest, rest.

Hi sore tum
it was good to read your comments I know how you feel about going back to work I am scared at the thought but I think it is because we are not ready. Who knows give it a couple of more weeks and we may start to feel better. I found week 4/5 difficult felt worse than I did before. I am now week 6 and still get pains and a lot of tiredness. Perhaps all us women should write a 'truth guide on a hysterectomy'!

Sore Tum, I think we have to get past the guilt feelings, though it's really hard. I have discovered too that my attitude to going back is changing; for the better! At 4 weeks I was very worried and just not ready mentally or physically. Now mentally I think I am, though I know it will be tough physically. Don't push yourself - especially if work is being understanding. You will know I think, when you feel ready for it. I can't remember what op you had, do you mind telling me? Anon, I agree about the guide. There's so much I wished I had known earlier. How do women manage that don't have access to a computer? Alex, if you're reading this, the increased HRT seems to have made a real difference in my outlook - yippee!

Hi anon
It is good to read your message, I am 6 weeks pre op and would not feel ready to go back to work. Mentally I am find but the tiredness would mean I wouldn't even last till lunchtime. I personally think you need more than 6 weeks week off but others may have different opionions. You will soon feel drained once you have done too much.
Good luck you will be OK
